Collecting watches is more than just a hobby. You have to be passionate, like design and engineering to really appreciate the art you are holding in your hand. Often a simple looking watch has a phenomenal movement inside or a very creative and appealing design, something that is hard to replicate or perfection further.
A lot of my friends do not understand what fascinates me about watches. They have a hard time imagining that you can spend a few thousand Euros on a watch or hours of researching all about them. For them, a watch is just a "piece of metal around the wrist" that solely has one purpose, to manage the routine of every days live.
Even when I show them the fine art of the ETA movement inside, the way it hums and twists, they cannot be excited. I personally would call those people ignorant. Watches are something that can accompany you for a long period of time in your life, often forever. The oldest watch I have is a pocket watch inherited from my grand grand grand father, somewhere close to the 1890. Still today is twists at 28.800 swings an hour and tells me precisely what time of teh day we have.
Coming to think about it, are we not glad some of us do not share our interest ? More people you would need to deal with when you go to an exclusive watch exihibition looking for a new piece of art.
However, this section of HobbySite.com is dedicated to all those that like watches, like researching all about them or to share information with others, or, simply just read what experience another collector has gained.
Have fun and share your experience.
